Risk Analyst - Commodity Risk
Location: Calgary, AB, Canada
A leading organization in the energy sector is seeking a Risk Analyst - Commodity Risk to support its growing commodities trading and risk management team. This company is expanding its trading platform across crude oil, refined products, natural gas, power, and environmental products, with operations in multiple global locations, including North America and Europe.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze and publish daily exposure reports, profit and loss (P&L) statements, and other relevant risk reports for North American crude trading activities.
- Develop automated and insightful risk reporting to enhance transparency and decision-making.
- Provide independent analysis of trading strategies to identify, escalate, and mitigate financial, operational, and reputational risks.
- Ensure adherence to risk governance policies, compliance requirements, and internal control frameworks.
- Act as the primary risk function contact for specific product lines while collaborating with teams across multiple global locations.
- Support process standardization and continuous improvement efforts within the risk function.
- Work closely with commercial teams and other functions to facilitate business growth while maintaining independent risk oversight.
- Assist with audit support, capital analysis, reconciliations, and alignment with financial reporting standards.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of both physical and financial energy markets.
Qualifications:
- Solid understanding of commodity risk management, including derivatives, physical crude/refined product markets, risk metrics (VAR, Stop Loss, Stress Testing), and trading cycles.
- Strong grasp of industry-leading risk governance practices, policies, and procedures.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across global teams and with stakeholders at all levels.
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance related to commodity derivatives.
- Experience in designing and implementing frameworks for effective risk management.
- Ability to analyze complex data and translate findings into actionable insights.
- Proven independence in risk analysis while maintaining strong commercial acumen.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with Commodity Trading Risk Management (CTRM) systems such as Allegro, OpenLink, or TriplePoint.
- In-depth knowledge of physical oil and refined product markets, including contracts, market data, and fundamental drivers.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in transaction modeling, portfolio analysis, VBA, SQL, Python, or Power BI.
- Professional certifications such as CPA, CFA, FRM or an advanced degree (MBA, Master's in Finance, etc.).
Additional Details:
- This role is based in Calgary, AB and operates on a standard 40-hour workweek, Monday to Friday, with occasional extended hours as needed.
